Studies on the Tissue Storage Iron in Hypophysectomized Rabbits

Abstract
The author investigated changes of the storage iron content of the liver, spleen, renal cortex and medulla, bone marrow and duodenum of the normal, sham-hypophysectomized, and hypophysectomized rabbits. The two forms of the tissue storage iron, ferritin and hemosiderin, were estimated with r e-thods of Yoneyama-Konno and Bruckmann-Zondeck,,
The results of the studie3 were statistically analysed and discussed, and he reached the following conclusion.
1. The content of the storage iron of the liver, spleen, renal cortex and medulla. and bone marrow decreases in the hypophysectomized animals.
2. The content of ferritin iron of the renal cortex and the contents of hemosiderin iron and ferritin iron of the duodenum are not distinctly decreased.
3. In the hypophysectomized animals having the decreased content of storage iron, the amount, of ferritin iron and hernosiderin iron are decreased linearly from two to six days after hypophysectomy.
4. The increased content of storage iron of the bone marrow is noted in some cases of the sham hypophysectomized animals. The results are thought to be a reactive phenomenon secondary to blood loss during the operation.
5. The hypophysectomized animals have anemia of variable degree.
G. It is thought that the hypophysis is an endocrine gland having an important role in the metabolism of storage iron.
